Are we surrounded by vanity?

'Selfie' was the word of the year (2013) according to the Oxford Dictionary, yes, a word which means you should take photos of yourself and post them online is the word of the year. As someone who detests the idea of selfies and believes there is never a good excuse to take a photo of yourself and post it online I am bewildered by this.

A few years ago it was the norm to log onto Facebook and be bombarded with people posting photographs of themselves, with captions stating 'yes or no?' or 'I know I look bad but I don't care'. You see the thing which gets me is that if they don't care or they don't like it, why would they put it online? However, in recent years many have wised up and kicked this trend in the bum, and we had a few good months of no selfies, or only group selfies.

Then came the celebrities, they caught onto the trend and brought it back with a bang! Some making it cute and classy, posting pics of them and their child or on a red carpet or something. Then there are the Kim Kardasians who take it one step too far and spend more time on holiday taking selfie snaps than enjoying themselves.

With the growth of the selfie trend are we, as society, growing into a narcissistic group of people who want nothing more than to have others comment on how we look? As a female, I must admit, I don't leave the house without make-up on, however, does that mean I am narcissistic or just self conscious? Women tend to spend more time looking at themselves than they realise, most mornings we wake up and sit in front of the mirror for a good half hour doing make-up and hair to ensure you look perfect before you leave the house.

To conclude, is the selfie feeding into a already vain society or is it creating a vain society? It's difficult to find a middle ground when we are surrounded by make-up and hair products and photos of people in magazines looking perfect. As 'normal' humans we may not look airbrushed all the time and may have to put a lot of make-up on to feel good about ourselves but I don't feel that makes us vain but that we are living in a vain society.
