Are we still a gender equal world?

In 21st Century England, the gender gap seems to be bigger than it was nearly 6 years ago. Gender equality has always been a huge issue in the world. With women being treated worse than men in the workplace financially, and being many being condemned for doing 'male' orientated jobs.
Research by the World Economic Forum (WEF) showed how the United Kingdom had fell from 18th in the worlds top 20 gender-equal countries to 26th. Showcasing how gender equality is still a major issue in our current climate. There seemed to be slight hope things were improving when women in senior official and managerial positions received a 1% pay increase to 35%. However there is still fault with other women who work in other positions in society still being slightly underpaid.

From the report, the WEF stated "no country in the world has achieved gender equality, report continues to highlight strong correlation between a country's gender gap and it's economic performance". As a result of this report it helps bring to our attention how unpaid and ill-treated women seem to be as the gender gap continues to grow.

The Truth 24, reported on a story of a sexism row in an unlikely environment. A fishing contest showed how men received a £1000 prize compared to women receiving a £25 reward. Shelley Basset, who won the women's category at British Open Sea Fishing Championship in 2011 and 2012 complained to organisers how men get 40 times as much as women.

Organisers of the fishing competition claim there was no sexism issue, due to how the competition was set out. However, this year, the competition rules were changed and as a result the maximum prize money is £500 regardless of gender.

The hope of women fighting for gender equality does seem to work. The suffragette movement enabled women to have more power and vote, as a result women become more prominent. However, the gender gap is still increasing so women and men need to continually rally together to not allow the gender gap to continuously grow.
