Citizen Journalists, good or bad for mainstream media?

With the expansion of the on-line world an increase in blogging platforms and social media networks it is far easier for people to air their own views to others hence the rise of the Citizen Journalism.

With many mainstream news reporters turning to the internet to publish work citizen journalists are following their lead and opening blogging platforms to publish and advertise their own journalistic writing. This makes it far easier to showcase their own personal views and opinions on major news stories.

Citizen journalists tend to put their own views across often in a biased manner with subjective views. The information they tend to provide is usually from an on-the-ground perspective which many find more compelling reportage due to it’s rawness. However, a proportion of readers describe the way these journalists write as of poor quality; reducing the validity of their reports.

Yet there is still growing demand for citizen journalism as people feel they fill the gap as they provide general public with the latest more localised news. As opposed to mainstream media who cover national and world wide news of a factual nature. It’s known some local newspapers use citizen journalists to provide them with news stories from their local area.

Not all citizen journalists view themselves the way mainstream media do therefore don’t moderate their writing and are unclear on the standards journalists must abide by; this makes them look unprofessional and can be offensive.
