Farewell writing?
With an ever growing world of internet are writers still needed? Looking at tradesmen and women you think, well yes, of course I'll always need a plumber or hairdresser however will writers always be needed? As twitter expands we see everyone turning into bloggers but managing to fit their ideas into a nifty little 140 characters. Therefore, will bloggers still be around if a few years? Do people really want to sit down at their laptop and read bloggers life stories? Well honestly I don't think they do. Most people look on blogs for how to edit a picture on Photoshop, they don't tend to care how a person sees the world anymore. However, the same, I feel is to be said about books. Already people are now using e-readers to rather than paper backs, soon Waterstones will be replaced and WHSmiths will only sell stationary. With an increasing internet world, writers aren't as necessary as they used to be. Students used to sit with textbooks searching for answers to maths questions as opposed to typing it into Google and instantly finding answers. Therefore, as a young writer it becomes more and more difficult to become a writer and get yourself known. Even newspapers are now available on mobile phones so when you turn around to someone proclaiming your dreams of becoming a newspaper journalist they simply shove their phone in your face saying I can read The Sun on my phone! Being a journalist is difficult and being a writer is difficult. Much like most arty type subjects you need to learn to change when the times, not often you see oil paintings of ships in massive frames but a girl with a twisted face. To be a writer you have to change in the times and that isn't always easy.
For example, back in the good old days, being a journalist wasn't about what you knew but rather who you knew. If you had a friend who had a cousin who had a brother who worked for the Daily Mail you were in. Now however, you're lucky to even get unpaid work experience at a company with no experience under your belt. As for a job, well you gotta go to that big scary place called University and make sure you walk away with a NJTC accreditation to even get your work looked at. Yet, if you was a singer, you could walk on the X Factor stage, stand in front of Mr Cowell and sing your heart out with the hope of getting put through. Whereas for writers all you can do is try desperately to send your blog and previous work to authors, publishers and editors with the hope they may open the email and be impressed.
Finally, with regards to writing I do fear that one day it won't be around, much like MySpace, Facebook, Bebo and Twitter people lose interest. The main thing people will all have an interest in is whats happening in the world. So as long as you're interested in the world, journalists for those sort of careers could last a little while.
